Walter Wesley
Guyer
Dec 1, 1919 — Feb 21, 2015
Walter Wesley Guyer, 95 years old, went to be with his Lord and Savior on 21 February, 2015 after a prolonged illness.
He was born and raised on the family farm, December 1, 1919 in Capron, Illinois. After graduation from Poplar Grove high school he attended Wessington Springs Junior College of Wessington Springs, South Dakota. He went on to graduate from Seattle Pacific University (B.A.), Asbury Theological Seminary (B.Div.), and Northern Illinois University (M.A Guidance and Counseling).
During his pastoral career Walter served as pastor of Free Methodist churches in St. Charles and Wyoming, Illinois. He then moved on to Wessington Springs Junior College for 12 years, first as as a professor and later as executive vice president.
After leaving South Dakota he returned to Illinois as Counselor and assistant principal of the Illinois Boys School of St. Charles, Illinois. He also taught at Naperville High School where he started a program for special needs students. In addition to each of his various professional appointments, Walter remained an active farmer, managing the family homestead .
Upon retirement he spent his summers at the Guyer family farm on Russellville Road in Capron and winters at the Light and Life Free Methodist Park in Lakeland, Florida.
But Walt Guyer, above all else, was a farmer. He loved his farm, his family, and his Lord. His years of struggle to achieve gave him great interest and empathy for those with difficult circumstances. Throughout his adult life, he connected with people by listening, advising, and encouraging. His concern for a person's relationship with Christ prompted him to pray for and encourage one to embrace the faith he consistently practiced. He made it a point in his latter years to pray with visiting friends and family members before leaving his home. He wanted to make his "life count for Jesus,"and influence people to live a Godly life. His legacy will live on through the generations.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Claude and Ollie (Hermanson) Guyer, his brothers, Albert Guyer, Mansel Guyer and Clifford Guyer , Evelyn (Rogers) Guyer, his wife of 60 years.
Surviving are his wife Elizabeth (Fenison), sons Albert Guyer of Capron, Illinois, Wesley Guyer (Chris), Fall City, Washington, Dorothy Terhune (David) Watervliet, Michigan, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, seven step children and thirteen step grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, 105 E. Grove Street, Poplar Grove, Illinois, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00.
