Vernon K. "Vern" McElroy, 75, life long Belvidere resident died Thursday evening, November 9, 2006 in Maple Crest Nursing Home after a long illness. Vern was born April 10, 1931 in Belvidere, IL the son of Francis and Eleanor C. (Mundy) McElroy. Vern married Sally J. Fletcher in Belvidere on March 4, 1951. Prior to his retirement; Vern was a supervisor with Woodward Governor Company. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Vern served our country in the U.S. Army serving in Korea and was a life member of V.F.W. John Hugo Kaiser Belvidere Post 1461and Woodward Governor's 25 Year Club.Survivors include his wife, Sally of Belvidere; children, Steven (Brenda) McElroy and Michael (Robin) McElroy both of Belvidere; grandchildren, Gregory (Racheal) McElroy, Rebecca Gibson, Tammy (Danny) Blankenship, Teresa Davidson, Melissa Wallace, Tiffany (Jake) Bennett, Brittany Murray; great grandchildren, Parker, Arabella, Hailey, Chevie, Robert Jr., Alexandra, Field, Logan, Mercedes, Natasha, Skyler, Garvin; sister, Daisy (Donald) Fowler of Belvidere; brothers, John (Audrey) McElroy of Florida and Frank (Thelma) McElroy of Houston, TX.; special cousin, Fred (Marylee) Frank; nieces, nephews.Vern is predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert "Pooch" McElroy; nephew, Johnny McElroy; mother and father in-law Olin and Alice Fletcher.The family acknowledges Pastor Allan Buss, Pastor Eugene Wille, OSF Hospice for their excellence and the wonderful staff at Maple Crest Nursing Home, whose care and kindness to Vern and his family has been immeasurable and so very appreciated.
