Shirley Jean Rubert, 81, lifelong resident of Belvidere, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Swedish American Hospital after a short illness. Born July 6, 1928 to Hugh and Stella (Holiday) Voorhies in Marengo, IL. Married Carl Rubert on November 7, 1948 in Poplar Grove, he passed away Sept. 17, 1975. Shirley worked many years at Arnold Johnson Paint and Wallpaper Store, the Wallpaper Discount Store and later as a teacher's assistant at Perry School in Belvidere. She attended Belivdere High School, member of Evangelical Covenant Church and was active many years in the homebuilder's group and later in the senior's group. Loving mother to son Larry (Melinda) Rubert and grandmother to Brett (Julia) Rubert and Katy (Marty) Small. Survived by sisters Genevieve (Don) Ellingson, Annabel (Floyd) Swanson, Mary Lou Voorhies, Donna Knox, and Joyce (David) Queen; brothers Jack (Vi) Voorhies and James (Barb) Voorhies, brother-in-law Eldon Stenerson and Sister-in-law Fran Rubert, many nieces and nephews and special friend Harry Papka. Predeceased by her parents and sisters Jennetta Totz and Judy Fisk and brothers Hugh and Robert Voorhies.
Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or to the Evangelical Covenant Church.
