Obituary

Samuel William Ruzic, 92, of Belvidere, IL, went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2025.Born on August 30, 1932, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Mary (Spora) and Samuel Ruzic Sr. Samuel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose life was characterized by faith, service, and a passion for helping others.

A proud graduate of Tilden Tech High School, Samuel went on to Iowa State University on a wrestling scholarship, where he made his mark by qualifying for the Olympic wrestling finals in 1952. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science, Samuel's path led him to serve in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. His commitment to learning continued, as he attended the Mayo Clinic School of Physical Therapy, earning his degree in 1960.

On July 19, 1958, Samuel married the love of his life, Mazie (Halm). Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage, raising two sons and building a legacy of love, faith, and community. Throughout their lives, they were dedicated to both their family and their community, volunteering their time and support.

Samuel had a strong work ethic and commitment to his profession. He spent many years in the field of physical therapy, working at St. Joseph's Hospital, Highland Hospital, and nursing homes such as Maple Crest and Northwoods in Belvidere. His expertise in rehab and sports medicine, along with his experience at Orthopedic Rehab Specialists, touched countless lives.

A lifelong advocate for physical fitness and wellness, Samuel believed in staying active throughout his life. Whether riding his bicycle to work or enjoying family bike rides, he made fitness a priority. Samuel also became a black belt in Okanowin Jutsu, training alongside his son, Christopher—a testament to his dedication and love for physical discipline.

He cherished the peaceful moments spent in nature, especially when fishing with his son, Benjamin. Together, they would cast their lines into the calm waters and enjoy the serenity of the outdoors. These trips became a special tradition creating lasting memories.

Samuel was an active and engaged member of his community. A longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, he also contributed to organizations such as the American Physical Therapy Association, the Illinois Physical Therapy Association, and the Friends of the Ida Public Library and Belvidere Sister Cities Association. He took great pride in being involved and always sought to learn and grow, both for his own benefit and for the well-being of those around him.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Samuel will be remembered most for the love and devotion he showed to his family. His legacy of service, hard work, and commitment to faith continues to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Samuel's life was a beautiful example of integrity, perseverance, and kindness, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
