Belvidere, IL

Roy A. Grimes, age 100. Passed away peacefully at his home on March 15, 2018. Born on November 20, 1917 to Elwood and Grace (nee Aubrey) Grimes in Marengo IL. He was the ninth of eleven children. He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1936. He married Alice M. Copas in 1940. They lived their entire lives in Belvidere.

Roy worked for Parsons' Casket Hardware for 40 years, retiring in 1981. He was an active member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, where he served as local treasurer and president.

Football and Baseball were his passions. As a young man he played in the city league, usually at shortstop sometimes at second base. He followed the Cubs, White Sox and Bears.

Roy was a devoted husband and father who is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, parents, siblings, and son-in-law, Morris Freedlund.

Surviving are his children: Marilynn Freedlund of Loves Park; David Grimes of Rowlett, TX; Kay (Robert) Carlson of Morris; Rhonda (Edward) Snearley of McAllen, TX; Gary Grimes of Knoxville, TN and Gloria (Michael) McCollum of Downers Grove; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brother-in-law Gordon Copas and sister-in-law Lorraine (Paul) Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.
