Obituary

Rodney Donald Johnson, 69, of Caledonia, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on May 14, 1955, to Joyce (Gilliland) and Charles Johnson, Rodney was a devoted husband, father, papa, and friend. His life was defined by his deep love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his many passions.

Rodney graduated from North Boone High School and went on to trade school to learn the craft of Ironworking. He spent 35 years as a proud Ironworker with Local 498, a job he approached with strength, skill, and dedication. The state line area is a better place because of him, as he helped build many of the buildings and businesses we drive by every day.  Rodney also served as the Sexton for the Lawrenceville Cemetery for 15 years, where he cared for the grounds with the same diligence and respect that he brought to every other part of his life. He retired at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.

Rodney married the love of his life, Deidra Olson, on October 8, 1983. Together, they raised three wonderful children and built a life full of love and memories. Rodney cherished his family above all else, and his greatest joy came from spending time with them, particularly his grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and happiness.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rodney had a deep love for the outdoors and a variety of hobbies. He was an active member of the Beloit Rifle Club and enjoyed duck hunting and fishing at his favorite pond. Summer nights were often spent taking his Harley out for a ride, feeling the wind and enjoying the freedom of the open road. Rodney's pride and joy also included his fully restored 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351, a classic car that reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship and style. He looked forward to his yearly fishing trips to Canada, where he enjoyed the serenity of nature and the company of good friends.

Rodney was also known for his love of cooking, particularly his fish fries, which earned him the title of "King of Fish Fries" in his circle of friends and family. He was a skilled cook, and his meals were always a treat for anyone fortunate enough to enjoy them. Rodney was always on the lookout for a good deal. He was always generous with his time and heart. Rodney was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a jack of a trades, whether it be mechanical, welding, or carpentry. One story recalling a time Rodney helped raise the floor of a 100 year old barn so his niece could get married there.

A true family man, Rodney's devotion to his loved ones and his community was unwavering. He will be remembered as a hardworking, kind-hearted, and all-around good man who brought joy to everyone around him.

Rodney is survived by his loving wife, Deidra Johnson; their three children; Erika (Josh) Hilden, Kris (Lauren Friday-Johnson) Johnson, Nick (Jessie Graham); his cherished grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brody; his brother, Brad (Barb) Johnson; as well as his dog, Pal. He is also survived by his extended family and many friends who will miss him dearly.

Rodney is welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Joyce and Charles.
