Willowbrook, ILRachel A. Newman, 90, of Willowbrook, Illinois died Monday afternoon, April 26, 2010 in Adventist Hospital, Hinsdale, after a sudden illness. Rachel was born February 2, 1920 in Belvidere, IL the daughter of Harvey N. and Adeline E. (Morse) Miles. Following her graduation from Belvidere High School she married Jarid B. "Jerry" Newman on October 24, 1941. Rachel worked for Second National Bank prior to her years at the Belvidere Community Unit School District 100 office. She then worked for the Belvidere Daily Republican in the advertising department as well as taking care of her family and home.Rachel was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Belvidere and with St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California after moving there in 1972. She loved growing up in Belvidere, where she raised her family in the home her husband, Jarid, built. Upon moving to California, she became very involved in her church, making many new friends, and enjoying the California lifestyle of the ocean, boats, sunshine and outdoor activities, including golf and lawn bowling. The last five years were spent in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, near her daughter, Mary Sue, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Following the very recent death of her husband, Jarid, she returned to Illinois to live near her other daughter, Nancy, and to be close to her family and friends in Belvidere.Survivors include her daughters Nancy (Don) Keprta of Hinsdale, IL and Mary Sue Blair of Coweta, OK; grandchildren Jessica (Tra) Griffith of Coweta, OK, Emily (Gavin) Wood of Muskogee, OK and Melody (Nathan) Poverud of Broken Arrow, OK; great grandchildren Sayde Griffith and Camdin Wood; brother Forrest (Louise) Miles of Belvidere, IL and nieces and nephews.Rachel is predeceased by her parents, husband, Jarid Newman; son, Theodore Newman and brothers Graydon Miles and Morse Miles.
