Michael “Mike” Roy La Scola

Michael “Mike” Roy La Scola, 79, of Belvidere, passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and loyal friend whose kindness, creativity, and quiet strength will be deeply missed.

Mike was born on June 29, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to Josephine (La Russa) and Michael Anthony La Scola.

On April 3, 1976, he married the love of his life, Bonnie (Keating). Together they built a life filled with love, adventure, and partnership, celebrating 50 wonderful years of marriage. Throughout their years together, they made homes in Minnesota, where they treasured life on the lake, as well as Colorado and Kentucky, before eventually settling in Belvidere.

Mike enjoyed a long and successful career as a manufacturing service representative. His expertise took him around the world, where he installed and serviced precision machinery for companies including Stiles Manufacturing, Mazak Corporation, and Brown & Sharpe. He was respected for his technical skill, dedication, and willingness to help others.

Outside of work, Mike embraced life with curiosity and creativity. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed photography, woodworking, and caring for aquariums filled with tropical fish—even seahorses. His woodworking talent produced beautiful handcrafted furniture and custom game and dining tables that will be treasured for years to come.

When Parkinson’s disease brought an end to his career and limited many of the physical hobbies he loved, Mike refused to let it diminish his imagination. Inspired by his lifelong fascination with dragons and his love of the Dragonriders of Pern series, he turned to writing fantasy stories centered on friendship, courage, and dragons. Two novels, Strange Alliances and Unexpected Alliances, were published, leaving a lasting legacy that reflected his vivid imagination and enduring love of storytelling.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie La Scola; his sister, Nancy Brando; his sons, Michael (Sally) La Scola and Jeremy (Kama) La Scola; and his grandsons, Wil and Nathan La Scola. He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Michael Anthony La Scola.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date.

Mike will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his inventive spirit, his craftsmanship, and the stories he created. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the things he built, and the imagination he shared with those who knew and loved him.
