Mercedes Rico Garcia, 84 of Belvidere, Illinois, passed away surrounded by family October 6, 2026.

Born on September 19th in 1942 in Chihuahua, Mexico, Mercedes was the daughter of the late Pablo Rico and Clementine. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose life was deeply rooted in faith.

Her faith was an important part of who she is. Mercedes was an active and devoted member of St. James Church of Belvidere, where she enjoyed participating in church activities and retreats.

Outside of church, Mercedes enjoyed spending time with family. She will be remembered for her strength, the fierce love she showed.

She is survived by her daughter, Maggie (Paul) Gaziano, her son Carlos Rico, her grandchildren: Andrea (Brandon) Negri, Emily (Kurt) Smentek, Anthony, Katie, Andrew, and her eight surviving siblings: Irma, Bertha, Pablo(Concha), Jesus (Alma), Guadalupe (Rafael), Alejandro (Patricia), Jose (Leticia), and Manuel (Nora).

She is lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Clementine, and her two brothers, Carlos and Mike.

Although her passing leaves a deep sadness in the hearts of those who loved her, Mercedes' family finds comfort in the faith she held so dearly and in many memories she leaves behind.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Anderson Funeral Information Services in Belvidere.

A mass at St. James Church of Belvidere to be announced.
