Mary A. Cordray, 90, of Garden Prairie, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026. She was born on January 11, 1936, to Dorothy (Mitchell) Hopperstad and Chauncy Star.

A lifelong resident of Boone County, Mary was a cherished member of her community, known for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and willingness to serve others. She devoted many years to volunteering, faithfully serving as an election judge and working the ticket booth at the Boone County Fair. She was also a proud member of the Farm Bureau.

Mary's faith was an important part of her life. As a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, she lovingly taught Vacation Bible School and was an active member of the Ladies Guild. She found great joy in serving her church and sharing her faith with others.

On December 23, 1955, Mary married the love of her life, Jay Cordray. Together they shared 62 beautiful years of marriage and were blessed with five children. Being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was Mary's greatest joy. She never missed a birthday, often arriving early so she could spend a little extra time with those she loved. Whether celebrating milestones, cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, or gathering for holidays, Mary made everyone feel special simply by being there. Her love was steady, thoughtful, and unconditional.

Mary loved spending time shopping. A trip to Macy’s was one of her favorite ways to spend the day, whether she was searching for something special or simply browsing. She always looked forward to getting her nails done and spending time at the mall with the girls.

Mary was an accomplished bowler who enjoyed both the competition and the friendships the sport brought into her life. She also found happiness in life's quiet moments. She enjoyed watching the birds and giving thanks for life's many blessings.

Mary is survived by her Children, Debbie Smith of Garden Prairie, David (Dana) Cordray of Garden Prairie, John (Donna) Cordray of Belvidere; grandchildren, Heather (Mark) Haley, Holly (Chad) Revolinski, Derek (Joey) Cordray, Brandy (Jason) Catalani, Andrew (Stephanie) Cordray, Megan (Adam) Fowler, Morgan (Matt) Eby; and twelve great-grandchildren; she is also survived by her brother, Kerry (Dar) Hopperstad, and sister-in-law, Judy Starr.

She is welcomed into heaven by her husband Jay Cordray; sons, Harold Cordray and Michael Cordray; son in-law Jeff Smith, sisters, Phyllis Schumaker, Pat Siebrasse, an infant sister, Ruth; and brother, John Starr.

Mary’s Memorial visitation will be Sunday August 9th between the hours of 4-8pm at Anderson Funeral Home. Located at 218 W. Hurlbut Ave. Belvidere, IL 61008. Memorial service will be Monday, August 10th at 11am at Anderson’s.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for establishing memorial contributions at a later date.

A celebration of Mary’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 22nd at 4p.m. at her home.
