Marjorie Stenerson, 91, of Poplar Grove, died Saturday, August 4, 2007, in Wesley Willows Health Care Center. She was born to Oscar H. and Mildred Peterson Stenerson on June 22, 1916, on a farm five miles from Poplar Grove, moving into the village at age 6. Marjorie graduated from Poplar Grove High School in 1933 and Capron High School in 1934, afterwards attending Brown's Business College in Rockford. She worked at 2nd National Bank, Belvidere, for several years and later at a bank in Rockford. Her last place of employment was Rockford's Roper Corp.Marjorie was a faithful member of Poplar Grove United Methodist Church for 86 years, serving as treasurer for 10 years. She was a member of United Methodist Women and enjoyed gardening and floral arranging; she and her twin sister, Marguerite, planted all the spring flowers on the church's south side for 25 years. She loved all sports: softball, basketball, bowling, and her favorite, tennis. Entering a Belvidere tennis tournament in 1939 not having lifted a racket in 5 years, she won the singles title. She also enjoyed playing bridge, and along with twin sister Marguerite as her partner, became Life Masters in 1998. In 1991 she co-founded 2001 PLUS with Marguerite, in an effort to keep students from smoking and using drugs and alcohol. An article was sent to Guideposts Magazine and was printed in the May, 2006, issue.Survivors mourning her passing include her twin sister, Marguerite Maitland, Rockford; nephews Gary (Sarah) Maitland, Cave Creek, AZ, and John Maitland, Poplar Grove; three grandnieces, Lesa Galluzzo and Shannon and Tiffany Maitland, all of Cave Creek, AZ. She was predeceased by her parents, brother LaVerne, and infant sister Darlene.
