Poplar Grove, IllinoisMarguerite Stenerson Maitland passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Wesley Willows Health Center, Rockford. She was born to Oscar H. and Mildred H. (Peterson) Stenerson on June 22, 1916, on a farm about 5 miles from Poplar Grove and moved into the village when she was 6 years old. She graduated from Poplar Grove High School in 1933 and from Capron High School in 1934, after which she attended Brown Business College. She worked at Manley Motor Sales in Belvidere for 3 years. She married Milton Maitland on July 20, 1940.Marguerite was a member of Poplar Grove United Methodist Church for 86 years. She was a Sunday school teacher for several years, church treasurer, and belonged to the UMW. She and her sister planted all the spring flowers on the south side of the church for about 25 years.She loved all sports, especially softball, basketball, bowling and tennis. She also enjoyed playing bridge and became Life Master in 1998, with Marjorie as her partner. In 1991 she and Marjorie co-founded 2001 Plus, which was to keep students from using drugs, alcohol, and smoking. This article was sent to Guidepost, an inspirational, interfaith magazine and to their delight, was printed in the May, 2006 issue.In 2002, Marguerite wrote her Memoirs, "At the Close of Day" so her granddaughters would know a little about their heritage.She leaves to mourn her passing, one son, John of Poplar Grove, her daughter-in-law, Sarah; 3 granddaughters, Shannon, Tiffiny and Lesa, all of Cave Creek, AZ.She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Gary Maitland, twin sister, Marjorie Stenerson, brother, LaVerne Stenerson and one sister in infancy, Darlene.
A memorial will be established with the church in Marguerite's memory.
