Obituary

Linda Kay (Johnson) Smith, of Southampton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026. She was born on March 27, 1947, to James C. Johnson and Emma (Schmutz) Johnson in Joliet, Illinois.

Linda and her family made their home in Wilmington, Illinois, where she graduated from the local high school in 1965. She went on to attend the University of Illinois in Champaign, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1969.

It was during a summer music camp at the University of Illinois in 1965 that Linda met the love of her life, Myron James J. Smith. Their shared love of music and their deep connection blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and they were married in 1969.

Together, Linda and Myron built a wonderful life and eventually moved to Massachusetts to pursue their careers. Linda worked for MITRE Corporation for many years, while Myron pursued a career in research.

She was an active member of the Boston Civic Chorus, affiliated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and had the opportunity to tour throughout Europe with the chorus. She also performed regularly at Tanglewood, the renowned music venue celebrated for its long history of exceptional musical performances.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Linda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jay Smith; her parents, James C. and Emma Johnson; and her in-laws, James and Jean Smith, formerly of Belvidere, Illinois.
