Obituary

Leonard C. Carlson, 93, of Belvidere, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 in O.S.F. St. Anthony Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born on August 1, 1916 in rural Boone County, Illinois, the son of Rudolph and Gullie (Bergman) Carlson. Leonard graduated from Belvidere High School class of 1934. He was married to Viola Walberg in Belvidere on February 10, 1940. She preceded him in death in 2001. He later married Marjorie Feldman in Belvidere on March 19, 2003. Leonard was a farmer. He then was the owner of Carlson Clover Farm Grocery Store. He sold the store and became a meat cutter for Piel's Grocery Store. He later worked for the State of Illinois as a Driver's license examiner before he became a real estate agent for Century 21. Leonard was a lifelong very active member of the Belvidere Evangelical Covenant Church. His church activities included, president of the Young People Society; Sunday School Secretary, Treasurer and Superintendent; Church Treasurer, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Trustee, Deacon, Member of the Board of Christian Education, Building Committee and was the leader of AWANA . He was a 65 year member of the Boone County Farm Bureau; a member of the Gideon's; Chamber of Commerce; president of Boone County Conservation Council; Illinois Board of Extension Service. He was a Belvidere Township Supervisor and Trustee for 28 years. He was an executive member and treasurer for the Keen Age Center for over 25 years and he chaired other committees. Leonard loved people and was a man of his word. He enjoyed fishing, friends, gardening, bird watching and the Cubs. He treasured his family and grandchildren and will be greatly missed by them and his church family. His relationship to the Lord was very important to him. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Belvidere; a son, Lloyd (Sandra) Carlson, Poplar Grove; four grandchildren, Andrea (Greg) Stevenson, Robin (Jerry) Carlson-Goethe, Scott (Sharon) Carlson, Jill (Scott) Schmidt; six great grandchildren, Jordan Goethe, Rylie Goethe, Olivia Carlson, Aubrey Carlson, Emma Schmidt, Eric Schmidt; four stepsons, Dan Feldman, Richard Feldman, Robert (Jane) Feldman, Roger (Deb) Feldman; four stepdaughters, Judith Kriegel, Mary (Mark) McGuire, Karen (Deen) Hulstedt, Deborah Feldman; nineteen step-grandchildren, 10 step-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (George) Pitts. In addition to his first wife, Leonard is preceded in death by his parents and son, Eugene Carlson.
