Lena Frances Carter, formerly of Urbana, died Friday morning, June 8, 2012. Frances was born on May 22, 1918 in the Land-Between-The-Lakes area (Trigg County) in Kentucky. She was the daughter of Dewitt Talmadge and Willie Douglas Mitchell. Frances graduated from Murray State University with degrees in music and commerce. After graduation from college, she taught choral music and orchestra in the Kentucky public schools and directed a church choir. Frances was also offered a chair in the flute section of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra; she taught flute classes for many years. She married Andrew Morris Carter on June 28, 1940, he died in 2000. During World War II, Frances worked in Washington D.C. as an assistant to Congressman Mel Maas of Minnesota and later for Congressman John Kunkel of Pennsylvania until Morris returned from Germany. They then moved to Champaign-Urbana where he worked on an advanced degree. Frances began her work at the University of Illinois as an assistant to the head of Journalism, moved to the Graduate College to handle Industrial Grants and Fellowships, and had an academic position in the College of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese for fifteen years until her retirement.Frances loved education, books, opera, sewing, golf, her dog Jazper, her good friends, and her family. She was a member of the University Place Christian Church in Champaign and of the Urbana Golf and Country Club where she was active in the Women's Golf League.She is survived by her children Kathie (Richard) Curlee of Belvidere, Andy (Ann) Carter of Leawood, Kansas; grandchildren Andy (Trinity) Curlee of Janesville, WI, Lynne (John) Johann of Lyons, Colorado, Catelyn (fiancé Kevin O'Connor) Carter of Fairway, Kansas, and Cassie Carter of Olathe, Kansas; great-grandchildren Tristan and Evan Curlee, Jack and Anna Johann; sister Jackie Prater of Calvert City, Kentucky. She is predeceased by her husband Andrew Morris Carter and sister Douglas Jones.The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Northwoods Care Centre for their loving compassion and friendship.
