Leigh Krahn Behnke, 92, of Rockford, formerly of Kaukauna, WI, died at 12:07 P.M. Monday, April 27, 2009, in P.A. Peterson Center for Health. She was born in Oconto Falls, WI, on April 1, 1917, the daughter of George Washington and Clara Rohn Krahn. On December 25, 1941, Leigh married George Arthur Behnke in Oconto, WI. Leigh was active in community service in Kaukauna and Appleton for over 60 years. She knit caps for new babies at local hospitals, made quilts for the Appleton battered women's shelter, started the Meals on Wheels program in Kaukauna, and served actively on the Winnebago, Outagamie and Wisconsin Medical Auxiliaries. She was a volunteer at the Appleton Blood Bank for many years, worked with both Boy and Girl Scouts in the area, and was active in the PTA at Park School. Leigh also served as an x-ray technician and was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Appleton.Survivors include son George (Pam) Behnke, Egan, MN; daughters Carol (Kit) Scheidenhelm of Belvidere, Mary (John) Place of Yakima, WA, and Sue (Bob) von Haden of Mission Veijo, CA; brother G. William (Dorothy) Krahn of Suring, WI; grandchildren Abbie (Frank) Nizzia of Menasha, Mindy (Jon) Heindel of Mission Viejo, CA, Matthew (Tiffany) Place of Tacoma, WA, Michael (Mai) Place of Lake Stevens WA, Leanne Place (wife of Christopher) of Sunny Vale, CA, Colin Scheidenhelm of Elk Grove Village, IL, Bret (Alicia) Scheidenhelm of St. Louis, MO, Drew Scheidenhelm of Hoffman Estates, IL, Laura Behnke of San Francisco, CA, and Lucas Behnke of San Francisco, CA; and eleven great-grandchildren. Leigh was predeceased by her parents, husband George, sisters Lorrain Meyer and Anita Downs, and grandson Christopher Place.
Memorials may be made in her name to Dr. George Behnke Scholarship (Community Foundation for the Fox River Valley, Inc.) or 1000 Islands Conservation Center, Kaukauna, WI.
