IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kenneth Earl
Nettleton
February 18, 1936 – October 5, 2025
Kenneth Earl Nettleton, 89, of Belvidere, IL, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025. Born on February 18, 1936, in Blaine, IL, Ken was the beloved son of Clarence and Mildred (Northrop) Nettleton.
A proud graduate of Belvidere High School, Class of 1956, Ken held a deep lifelong pride in his school and community. When inducted into the Belvidere Football Hall of Fame, he shared words that defined his character:
"You may not realize it as much now, but when you graduate from Belvidere High School, you're going to have pride. You're going to carry that pride with you all through your life, and that's one thing nobody can ever take away from you."
Following graduation, Ken honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he met the love of his life, Waltraud, while stationed in Germany. They were married on November 14, 1959, and went on to share 65 wonderful years of marriage and raise three daughters together.
Ken dedicated over two decades of service to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, beginning as a young man in radio and dispatch and rising through the ranks to serve as a Sherriff's Deputy for 23 years. He was a devoted public servant who deeply valued his role in keeping the community safe. During his service he was the first on Boone County Sherrif's Dept. to have a K-9, was on the rescue team for the Belvidere tornado, and provided security for 3 sitting presidents and Judith Ford when she was crowned Miss America. Public safety was personal for Ken, it was his own family, friends, and hometown.
Faith and community were cornerstones of Ken's life. A longtime member of St. James Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, he also participated in the IOU Club, the VFW, and the American Legion. Ken believed in being active and involved. He helped establish the Patrol Picnic, a tradition now over 57 years strong, supporting and celebrating local school crossing guards. He also served as Chairman of Belvidere's Oktoberfest for 20 years, pouring his heart into creating joyful, community-centered events.
Ken had an unmatched ability to bring people together. Known for his generous spirit and infectious joy, he was truly the life of the party. For over 50 years, he brought holiday cheer as Santa Claus, delighting children and adults alike with his warmth, humor, and genuine love of the season.
Above all, Ken will be remembered for his unwavering dedication—to his faith, his family, his country, and his hometown. He leaves behind a legacy of service, joy, and community that will not be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife Waltraud; his three daughters; Michelle (Ralph) Poznanski, Patricia (Brian) Elmer, and Christine "Tina" (Tom) Miller; grandchildren, Katie, Christopher (Sarah), Abby (Calvin); great-grandson, Zachary, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a grateful community who cherished his many contributions.
He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, Clarence and Mildred Nettleton; sister, Lois Najdowski, and brother, Donald Nettleton.
