Kenneth B. Moore, 88, of Belvidere, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in Maple Crest Care Center from complications due to Diabetes. He was born on July 9, 1922 in Rockford, Illinois; the son of William and Pearl (Fiser) Moore. Ken was married to Isabelle L."Issie" Culvey in Belvidere on November 24, 1945. He was employed as a Mechanic for Universal Joint/ Borg-Warner Co. in Rockford. Kenneth was a veteran of WWII having served in the Army. His military record revealed that he arrived at the Hawaiian Islands on June 6, 1943 as a Pfc. He was in the Battle of Makin Island returning to Hawaii on November 20, 1943. Ken then saw action during the Battle of Saipan in June 1944 where he was seriously wounded on June 5, 1944. He was flown back to the Hawaiian Islands, recovered from his wounds and then returned to the 27th Division in December, 1944. He then was in the Battle of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, was seriously wounded a second time on April 20, 1945. He was sent to Tinian Island on a U.S. Navy Ship to recover from his wounds. He returned to Okinawa in 1945. until being sent to Replacement Depot on Saipan on June 12, 1945. Towards the end of the war, the official news of Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945; V-J Day declared on September 2, 1945, he then left Okinawa for Hirotsuka, Honsha, Japan; he left for Yokohoma, Japan in late September for Washington, D.C. arriving there on Oct. 8, 1945 and arrived home on October 10, 1945. Ken was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the V.F.W. John Hugo Kaiser Belvidere Post #1461 and American Legion Boone Post #77. He enjoyed playing golf and was known as a great amateur singer. He was well known as "Uncle Kenny" to many and was ready to help you with anything. While he did not have any children, his extended family was near and dear to his heart. He is survived by four, sisters-in-law, Mickey Culvey-Billman; Marjorie Culvey Penwarden; Sue Moore and Helen Sanford; a brother-in-law, Merrill (Estalee) Culvey; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Carol "Bunny" Moore, Ella Mae Kruse; Gyla (Albert) Pomering, and Cleo (Robert) Larson and four brothers, John, Don, Laverne and Dale Moore; and two brother-in-laws, Donald (Elizabeth) and Kenneth (Fran) Culvey.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Legion or the V.F.W.
