Karl L. Mapes, 81, of Genoa, IL and formerly of Belvidere and Marengo; died peacefully early Thursday morning, October 25, 2012 in his home after a lingering illness. Karl was born May 10, 1931 in Elgin, IL. He was a retired employee of Arnold Engineering, where he worked for over 38 years. Karl enjoyed collecting Case farm tractors and toy farm tractors. Karl served our country in the US Army from 1949 through 1952 and was a former member of the American Legion.Karl is loved and will be missed by his children Julie Mapes of Marengo, IL, Betty (Adolfo) Rangel of Genoa, IL, Randy (Kristia) Mapes of Waterman, IL; brothers Ralph (Phyllis) Mapes of Elgin, John "Toby" Mapes of Beloit, WI,; sister Lola (Willis) Leman of Elgin; step-sister Judy (Chuck) Arnold of Rockford; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.Karl is predeceased by his parents, sisters Nancy Faley and Ethel Swinger; brothers Jim and Robert and one great-grandchild.
