John Arthur Rankin, 76, of Poplar Grove, IL, passed away peacefully, Thursday, September 22, 2022, in his home. John was born December 7, 1945, the son of John Robert and Dorothy (Pogue) Rankin in Burlington, Iowa. He married Mary (Marcia) Drummond on October 16, 1966. Together they had one son, Matthew. John served in the United States Navy. He served on the U.S.S Sutherland destroyer during the Vietnam War. John then went on become an Illinois State Police Officer, serving most of his time at ISP District 16, Pecatonica. John retired as a Master Sergeant in 1995. John was extremely hardworking and loved to be surrounded by his family. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking and furniture restoration. Most of all, John enjoyed attending and cheering on his granddaughter's at their many high school sporting events.
John is loved and will be missed greatly by his loving wife, Marcia; his son, Matt (Karli) Rankin; his sister, Sherry Twitchell; his grandchildren, Megan (Trace) Johnson, Abi (Matt) Dhamer, Riley Rankin; great-grandchildren, Finley, Crew, Coen and Kase; as well as his niece and many nephews, Jeffrey, Julie, Jay, Jared, Jacob, Jayce, Kyle, Ben and Rankin Twitchell. Two infant children; Staci and Christopher, his infant brother, Robert Lee and his parents, preceded John in death.
John's celebration of life memorial will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Timber Point Golf Course, located at 5750 Woodstock Rd, Poplar Grove, IL 61065. In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorials be given to St. Jude Children's Hospital, www.stjude.org. The family would like to thank you OSF Hospice and OSF APRN Kathleen M. Meade.
