John M. "Jack" Walters, 83, of Poplar Grove, died Sunday, January 27, 2013 in Maple Crest Care Center. He was born on April 25, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois; the son of Rex and Evelyn (Escher) Walters. Jack was married to Marie Nelson, in Belvidere on November 6, 2004. He opened Belvidere's first Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in 1955. He later became a banker for United Bank of Illinois before retiring and moving to Arizona. He became a business manager for the Arizona State Prison in Yuma, Arizona. Jack was a 52 year member of the Belvidere Noon Rotary Club. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. Jack held a 30 year perfect attendance with the club. Jack graduated from Oregon High School, Class of 1948. He is survived by his wife, Marie; four children, Greg Walters, Dave (Cindy) Walters, Sue (Dan) Holmes and Lyn (Chris Swanson) Wales; five grandchildren, Greg Walters, II Erin (Josh) Herron, Andrew (Rachael Spencer) Walters, Carly Holmes and Cameron Wales; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Kennedy Herron; Marie's children, Suzanne (Matt) Varner, John (Jane) Nelson, Christine (Michael) Loftus, and their families. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jan Allison Walters and two sisters, Mary Vett and Jane Crawford.
