Obituary

John Leslie Davis went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 10:30 p.m. on April 4, 2012 at Swedish American Hospital after a sudden, brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his home-going. He was born in Elkhorn, WI on Feb. 7, 1939 to John and Lorena (Hill) Davis. He grew up in Caledonia, IL and attended Caledonia Grade School. He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1957, and later graduated from Rock Valley College with a degree in Industrial Engineering Technology. He was Manager of Inside Sales at W.A. Whitney Mfg. Co., Rockford, for 35 years. He was currently employed part-time as Donor Representative at Slavic Gospel Association in Loves Park, IL. He married Shirley Sunden at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Belvidere, IL on Sept. 30, 1961, and they recently celebrated 50 years of marriage at an open house with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, four daughters, Cynthia (Keith) Doering, Rockford, IL, Valerie (Chuck) Peterson, Carol Stream, IL, Tanya (Mike) Hulstedt, Belvidere, IL, and Kristine (Bryan) Dickson, Mattoon, IL and 19 much loved grandchildren. He is also survived by his 2 brothers, Stanley (Sandy) Davis, Davis Junction, IL, David (Teresa) Davis, Belvidere, IL and sister Linda Davis, Bolivar, MO, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lorena Davis, Humansville, MO and his sister Donna (Doug) Coble, Dunnegan, MO. He loved the Lord and served Him faithfully. He was an active, long-time member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Belvidere, IL, having served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Deacon, Sunday School Secretary/Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Awana leader and choir member. He and his wife, Shirley, loved traveling and enjoyed trips every summer to many parts of the US, Canada and Mexico. One of the highlights of the travels included a missions trip with their church youth group to Reynosa, Mexico. They also traveled to Russia and Ukraine with Slavic Gospel Association and visited relatives in Kalmar, Uppsala, and Stockholm, Sweden. He deeply loved the Lord and his family, and he will be sorely missed.
