Jarid Boyd Newman, 92, of Broken Arrow, OK, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2010 in his home following a short illness. He was born on October 15, 1917, in Belvidere; the son of Boyd Andrew and Marion Ruth (Griffeth) Newman. His birth father died when he was very young and was raised by his step-father, Walter Fry. Jarid and his wife lived in Broken Arrow for the last five years. Prior to moving to Oklahoma, he lived more than 30 years in California. Jarid was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. He graduated from Belvidere High School, class of 1935 and from Rockford Business College with a degree in accounting. Jarid served in the Army during WWII. He married Rachel Adeline Miles in Belvidere on October 24, 1941. Jarid was employed for 17 years as a postman for the U.S. Postal Service. He later worked as an accountant for Harms and Elliott C.P.A. Firm, Belvidere; Belvidere Construction Co. Belvidere; Basin Marine, Newport Beach, CA; and Greenleaf Park, Costa Mesa, CA for a combination of 40 years. While in Belvidere he belonged to the First Presbyterian Church and later St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach. He was very active volunteering time and talent to the church especially the adult choir, as Deacon and serving on committees. Jarid had a love for music and playing the clarinet. He was a member of the 1929 National Championship Band. In addition to his church membership he was a former member of the Lion's Club and enjoyed bowling on various bowling leagues. As a young man, he was quite athletic and played baseball in high school and in the Army. Jarid is survived by his wife of sixty eight years, Rachel, of Broken Arrow; two daughters, Nancy (Don) Keprta, Hinsdale, IL; Mary Sue Blair, Coweta, OK; three granddaughters, Jessica (Tra) Griffith, Coweta, OK; Emily (Gavin) Wood, Muskogee, OK; and Melody (Nathan) Poverud, Broken Arrow, OK; two great grandchildren, Sayde Griffith and Camdin Wood; a brother, George Fry, Oro Valley, AZ and several nieces and nephews. Jarid is preceded in death by his son, Ted; his parents and a sister, Barbara Derflinger.
Memorial contributions may be made to his memory to the Coweta Public School, P.O. Box 550, Coweta OK 74429, Attn: Coweta Band. Jarid's granddaughters were former band members.
