October 15, 1931 – June 9, 2023
James H. "Pee-Wee" Voorhies, 91, of Belvidere, passed away June 9, 2023. He was born on October 15, 1931 in Belvidere, the son of Stella (Holiday) and Hugh Voorhies. James was kind and sociable and often wore a smile. On June 4, 1954 he married Barbara Marvin. Together they shared 2 children and 59 years of marriage. He worked for many years at Ipsen Commercial Heat Treatment, and Henneberry Motors. James was a member of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church. He was a part of the Men's club there and often assisted with church club dinners. James was an avid sports fan. He played many sports and rooted for his favorite teams. He was the coach for the Rockford Reds softball team, and enjoyed playing golf and billiards. His favorite sports teams included the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed harness horse racing. He will be missed by many.
He is survived by his son, Chuck (Deborah) Voorhies; siblings, Mary Lou Voorhies, and Donna Knox; grandchildren, Barbie Voorhies, and Jayne (Robert) Voorhies; 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Viola Voorhies, Judy (Ralph) Huge, Jill Marvin, Jane Marvin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family whom he loved dearly. He is predeceased by his wife, Barbara; his parents, Stella and Hugh Voorhies; son, Michael Voorhies; siblings, Hugh Voorhies, Jeannetta Totz, Jack Voorhies, Genevieve Ellingson, Shirley Rubert, Ann Swanson, Robert Voorhies, Judy Fisk and Joyce Queen.
James' visitation will be Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10am at Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, located at 112 Cherry St., Cherry Valley, IL 61016. Memorial Service to follow at 11am. Inurnment at Highland Garden of Memories at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
