Helen Marie Mapes, 93, of Caledonia, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026.

Born on April 6, 1933, in Sycamore, Illinois, to Floyd and Elizabeth Fisk, Helen devoted her life to her family. She was a loving wife, an exceptional homemaker, and a devoted mother whose greatest joy came from caring for those she loved. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and countless cherished memories, where family and friends always knew they were welcome. Through simple acts of love, generosity, and kindness, Helen created a lifetime of treasured moments that will remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Ira Mapes, on September 8, 1988; her brother, Eldon Fisk; and her great-grandson, Tyler Thiede.

She is survived by her children, Linda Gray, Floyd Mapes, Mary Ryan, and Russell (Patti) Mapes; her siblings, Robert Fisk, James Fisk, and Annabelle Maitland; her cherished grandchildren, Gary (Rachel) Thiede, Kevin (Kim) Thiede, Shelly Thiede, Stacy (Brad) Willemsen, Katherine (Randy Dohrwardt) Mapes, Heinrich "Rick" (Nikki Monn) Schwebke, Jarod Binkley, Zach (Madelene) Mapes, Emily Sandall (Eric Osberg), and Elissa Sandall (Jake Stima); along with many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy throughout her life.

Helen will be remembered for her unwavering love, kindness, and dedication to her family. As a homemaker, she created a welcoming home filled with love, comfort, and support. She found her greatest fulfillment in raising her family and making her house a place where everyone felt welcome. Whether preparing meals, celebrating holidays, or simply spending time together, Helen had a special way of making every gathering meaningful and every person feel loved.

Helen faithfully attended and volunteered at Caledonia Congregational Church for many years. She took great joy in serving her church family and community, especially through the monthly dinners provided by the church. Known for her delicious homemade pies, Helen generously shared her time and talents, helping to make those gatherings special for all who attended.

Helen also dedicated more than 30 years as a volunteer at Maple Crest Care Centre, where she used her skills to help residents look and feel their best. She found great fulfillment in bringing comfort, confidence, and companionship to those she served, knowing that something as simple as a fresh hairstyle could brighten someone's day and lift their spirits.

As a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, she shared her wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love across generations. Her gentle spirit, patient heart, and quiet strength served as an example to her family, and the lessons she taught through her actions will continue to live on in those she leaves behind.

Her gentle spirit, caring heart, and steadfast devotion to those she loved will never be forgotten.

Helen's legacy lives on through the family she cherished so deeply and the values she passed on to each generation. Her love, compassion, selfless service, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire those who knew her. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at Highland Garden of Memories, located at 9800 IL-76, Belvidere, Illinois. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Helen's life. Following the graveside service, everyone is welcome to join the family for lunch at the Roscoe Township Community Center, located at 4562 Hononegah Road, Roscoe, Illinois, from 11am-2pm, as they gather to share memories and honor Helen's life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rockford Rescue Mission or to Mercy Hospice.
