Hazel (Nee Mandrell) Dowling-Maitland, 97, formerly of Belvidere, IL, passed away peacefully late Sunday night, November 22, at Odd Fellow Nursing Home in Green Bay, WI where she had been residing. She was born on November 26, 1911 to Elvis Henry & Maybelle Ellis Mandrell in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Hazel endured the 1918 influenza pandemic and lost two brothers and her twin sister to the flu. Following her parents' deaths in 1922, Hazel moved to northern Illinois to live with other family. In Belvidere, Illinois, Hazel met the love of her life, Noble Dowling. In 1936 they were married and grew together to be vital members of the Belvidere community. Noble and Hazel raised four children, Noble Foster, John, Richard, and Beatrice. They were married 49 wonderful years until Noble's death in 1986. Hazel was an avid knitter and loved to work with ceramics. She was a member of Evergreen Covenant Church in Rockford, Illinois. She had many kind and devoted friends that faithfully kept in touch following her move to Green Bay five years ago. Noble and Hazel Dowling and Ray and Meredith Maitland had long been family friends. Following the deaths of their beloved Noble and Meredith, Hazel married Ray Maitland in July 1990. They were the best of friends and cared for each other tirelessly. They were happily married until Ray's death in 2001. Hazel is survived by her children Noble Foster (Sue) Dowling, Spring Hill, FL; John (Judy) Dowling, The Villages, FL; Richard (Connie) Dowling, Cherry Valley, IL; Beatrice (Michael) Clegg, De Pere, WI; nine grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first and second husbands Noble and Ray, her son James Douglas; her grandson Noble John; her brothers Clyde Mandrell, Henry Mandrell, John Mandrell, and Arch Mandrell; her twin sister May Mandrell, and sister Loreen McGill.
