Obituary

Gordon E. Hammond, 85, a lifetime resident of Belvidere, IL, passed away on August 22, 2019 following a sudden illness. He was born on November 20, 1933 to Glyndon and Emma (Humbracht) Hammond in Belvidere, IL. Gordon married his "Honey" and childhood sweetheart, Pat, on June 12, 1954 and they had been married for 65 years. He attended Belvidere High School, and at the age of 19, Gordon enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from 1952-1956.

Gordon worked many jobs to provide for his family, before landing a job as an electrician at Sundstrand's and retiring from there after 30 years. In 1967 he was one of the founding coaches for Belvidere Junior Tackle. He served as the Head Coach of the Lightweight Team, and made lasting connections with many of the players.

Gordon owned Hammond Electric for many years. He was an avid racing fan traveling to Daytona and Indianapolis 500 races. He even owned his own Short Tracker Racecar #28 that he and his good friend, Rod, would race at Rockford Speedway. He served as the President of Jaycees', and was also a Coon Creek Caster and Belstone member. He joined the American Legion and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1461. At the VFW he served in many positions, including "Commander" and was proud to be involved in the Honor Detail that recognized his departed friends and military brothers.

He loved riding with his motorcycle group, the 'Good Ole Boys', fishing, trapping, and was a huge Green Bay Packers fan. Gordon loved to travel, visiting many places, but his favorite place was Kailua Beach, Hawaii. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Gordon will be dearly missed by his wife, Patricia; his sister, Patsy Feltz; his children, Lori (Doug) Ludemann of Caledonia, IL, Gordon "Chip" (Mary) Hammond of Honolulu, Hawaii, Sherri (Craig) Fowler of Belvidere, IL, and Michelle (Jered) Hart of Belvidere, IL; his grandchildren, who called him "Papa", Mystika and Heather Ludemann, Holly (Jason) Charlesworth, Jason "Will" (Pam) Fowler, Sarah (Mike) Yani, Noah Hammond, and Bailey and Shannon Hart; his great-grandchildren, Haley, Tyler, Case, Cole, Deegan, Travis, and Kai.
