Belvidere, IllinoisGlyndon D. Hammond, 83, of Belvidere died Friday afternoon, December 4, 2009 in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center after a short illness. Glyndon was born March 16, 1926 in Belvidere the son of Glyndon D., and Emma C. (Humbracht) Hammond, Sr. Glyndon married Beverly Helligas on February 22, 1948 in Belvidere. Over the years Glyndon worked as a Class A Machinist having worked for Roper International and Sundstrand Corporation. Glyndon also sold cars for Wolf Chevrolet, sold insurance for State Farm, real estate broker, a farmer, auctioneer, a seed salesman for Moorman and Columbia feeds and a roofer. Glyndon was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army in the Leyti Gulf, Pacific Theater. He marched in front of the palace in Japan on the day Japan surrendered.Glyndon was a life long member of the John Hugo Kaiser Post 1461 VFW, a member of the American Legion Boone Post 77, a member of the joint Funeral Honor Detail. He attended Davis United Methodist Church in Herbert for over 30 years and was active as a lay speaker. Glyndon was noted for his poetry and stories he wrote; and also enjoyed golf and bowling.Survivors include his daughters, Cheryl Dye of West Monroe, LA, Susan (Terry) Keegan of DeWitt, IA; grandchildren, Thomas Wince, Daniel, Kelly, Molly, Peter and Caleb Keegan; sisters, Ethel Lee, Patsy (Lowell) Feltz both of Belvidere; brother, Gordon (Pat) Hammond of Belvidere; numerous nieces and nephews including a special nephew Harold Hammond II.Glyndon is predeceased by his parents, wife, Beverly, brothers Bill, Ronnie, LeRoy, Harold and son-in –law, John Dye.
Memorials can be given in care of the family or Boone County Council on Aging.
