Obituary

Gerald W. Leonard, 88, of Belvidere, died Tuesday morning, January 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Gerald was born May 11, 1925 in Lamoni, Iowa, son of Roy and Mona (Scott) Leonard. He served in the Army from 1943-1946 in the 32nd infantry division and participated in the liberation of the Philippines. Gerald married Shirley Johnson on November 11, 1949 in Belvidere. He was employed by NICOR gas for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Gerald was a member of the Belvidere Moose Lodge, and held various offices over the years and was the Pilgrim Degree recipient in 1982. Gerald attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere. He participated on a bowling league for over 45 years. He was a volunteer driver for the Boone County Council On Aging for 9 years. In later years, he enjoyed reading and traveling to Iowa to visit relatives. Gerald was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to all and had a passion for living life to the fullest. He is loved and will be missed by his son, Steven Leonard of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Melissa (Timothy) Kiekow of Volo, IL and Chad (Linda) Leonard of Wheaton, IL; great-grandchildren, Logan and Elena Kiekow; brother, Shelby Leonard; sisters, Barbara DeGroff, Leah (Dick) Helm, Lena Leonard; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Marie Schabacker. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; daughter-in-law, Katy; brothers, Tommy Leonard, Paul Leonard, Chester Leonard, Donald Leonard; sister, Imo.

Memorials may be given to the family in Gerald's name, a fund will be established at a later date.
