Belvidere, ILGeorge Ralph Toomey, 85, of Belvidere died Sunday evening, May 24, 2009 in the Emergency Room of Swedish American-Belvidere after a lengthy illness. George was born April 21, 1924 in Harvard, IL the son of George P. and Emma Bridget (Scott) Toomey. He was raised in Belvidere and served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theater under General Patton. Following the war he re-enlisted for an additional 3 years. Over the years, George owned a gas station, was a machinist at Ingersoll Tool and in retirement, worked for the Public Safety Building. He enjoyed bowling, puttering around in his yard, conversing with friends and teasing the kids. George was very patriotic and proud of his service to our country.Survivors include his wife, Frances of Belvidere; children, Wes Baylander of Belvidere, Becky (Tom) DeVlieger of Rockford, Monica (Jerry) Maleck of Belvidere, Dawn (Jerry Brenz) Brinkmeyer of Roscoe; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister Gladys Vangeisen of Belvidere; brother in-law, Ellis (Jenifer) Baylander and many nieces and nephews.George is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Agnes Toomey; infant brother, Wayne Toomey; daughter in-law Peggy Baylander; son in-law Dean Brinkmeyer; brother in-law Leo Vangeisen.
A memorial will be established.
