Everett William "Ozzie" Nelson, 88, of Westlake Village, CA, formerly of Belvidere, died Friday, September 12, 2008, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Boone County, IL, on April 4, 1920, the son of Oscar William and Alma Emelia Kjell Nelson. Ozzie graduated with the class of 1938 from Belvidere High School. On November 24, 1946, he married June Cole in Belvidere; she died May 20, 2007. Ozzie lived over 50 years in Belvidere, moving to California in 2003 to be nearer his son and granddaughters. Ozzie proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW II was honorably discharged December 4, 1945. On June 22, 1946, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement on August 7, 1944. The citation credits Sergeant Nelson's brilliant daring and outstanding devotion to duty, reflecting high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. Ozzie was employed by National Sewing Machine Company from 1938 until its closing in 1954. He then worked for Barber Colman for 30 years, retiring as the shipping supervisor in 1984. He was a Master Bridge Player and loved bowling, pool, and bingo.Survivors include his son, Dr. Russell (Dawn) Nelson and granddaughters Kylie, Ali, Taylor, and Hayley Nelson, all of Westlake Village, CA; and sisters Mildred Allen and Marge Campbell, both of Belvidere. He was preceded in death by his wife June, daughter Nancy, and brothers Russell Paul Nelson and Kenny J. Nelson.
