Obituary

Eugene Johnston, age 93, passed away peacefully at home on March 1, 2026, surrounded by the love that defined his life.

He was born on May 7, 1932, in Chicago to his mother, Alice (Vydareny) Johnston. Eugene proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, a time in his life he spoke of often and with great pride. His dedication to service remained an important part of who he was.

On July 28, 1956, he married the love of his life, Barbara. Together they built a beautiful life and raised four children, creating a family rooted in faith, love, and devotion. Eugene was a proud and involved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His grandchildren lovingly called him "Papa," a name that meant the world to him.

Eugene was a man of deep and unwavering faith. He loved God, spoke openly about his faith, and prayed often. His relationship with the Lord guided his life and shaped the example he set for his family. He expressed his love through thoughtful, handwritten letters and carefully chosen cards for special occasions; treasures that will be deeply missed by those who received them.

He found great joy at the family cabin in the North Woods, affectionately calling it "Heaven on Earth." There, he cherished time with family and the beauty of nature. Eugene had a special place in his heart for animals of every kind. He delighted in feeding birds, squirrels, raccoons, ducks, any creature that wandered near, and he especially loved dogs. Caring for them brought him simple, genuine happiness.

Eugene was known for being stubborn at times, but equally kind, loving, and steadfast. He was a devoted provider and a hands-on father and grandfather who attended school field trips, celebrated milestones, and treasured every opportunity to spend time with his family.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara; his children, Deborah C. (John) Downs, Lisa K. (Les) Tish, and Jean M. (Mike) Berman; his grandchildren, Brittany L. (Trevor Hill) Nieft, Kayce G. (Seth) Hayes, Melissa T. Johnston, Kaitlyn M. (Bill) Standerford, Ashlee A. (Danny) Gethner, Isabela B. (Abe) Joyce, Austin (Courtney) Miner, and Tyler (Tristain) Miner; and his great-grandchildren, Anya R. Hill, Weston B. Standerford, Tripp A. Hill, Myles J. Joyce, Emsley M. Standerford, Knox J. Hill, Nova M. Miner, Wyatt R. Joyce, Josie M. Miner, Weston J. Miner, and Austin Jr., who is on the way.

He is also survived by close friends Frank Cobb; James and Donna Newbauer; Mark and Chris Albertus; and Mildred Schuman, affectionately known as "Tinker."

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice; his stepfather, Lawrence Ulrich; his son, James A. Johnston; his brother, James W. Johnston; and his sister-in-law, Eleanor Johnston.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the entire Miner family for their unwavering support, love, and presence during this time. Your kindness has meant more than words can express.

Eugene's legacy is one of faith, devotion, service, and unconditional love. His prayers, his letters, his stories, and his steady presence will be forever missed, but the foundation he built within his family will endure for generations.

Cremation rites have been entrusted to Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services.
