Elizabeth A. Slater ,93, of Rockford, died Friday, August 29th, 2014 in Peterson Meadows. She was born on January 7, 1921 in Glen Carbon, IL. to Charles Motlet Thackston and Della Mae Thackston (nee Raney). On February 20 1943 she married Dr. James A. Slater PhD. in St. Louis, Missouri. The bride taught English and science at Brookport (Illinois) high school. She worked as a Research Assistant to her husband at the University of Connecticut. Throughout her life she supported him in his career and with his many interests. She loved decorating for holidays, especially Christmas. Her hobbies were reading, especially mysteries, shopping for bargains, collecting nutcrackers and watching TV, especially Carol Burnett and Tom Selleck. She loved all animals but had a special love for cats . She rescued and lived with many who gave her much pleasure. The only thing she asked of her family was: "Don't leave me with any left overs". She passed peacefully thanks to the loving care of her wonderful caregivers and Visiting Nurses Hospice care. Survivors include children James A. (Geraldine Gibbon-Slater) Slater II, Lawrence, KS; Jacquelyn Rae (John Alan) Neil Boss, Belvidere; Samuel Thackston (Nicki Hall) Slater, West Hartland CT; and Lydia Ann Slater-Hintzsche, Poplar Grove; grandchildren Alexander Wolpe, Rockford, and Rae Wolpe, Cape Town South Africa; two great-grandchildren Luka and Hannah Wolpe, both of Cape Town South Africa, special caregiver and friend Chris Peterson and Pumpkin.
Graveside Service 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2014 in Belvidere Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Chapel 218 W. Hurlbut Av. Belvidere, IL To express condolences online, please visit www.AndersonFCS.com.
