Obituary

Elizabeth "Liz" Herkey-Lopez, age 65, of Belvidere, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 15, 2026, surrounded by her family, with her husband holding her hand.

Born on November 15, 1960, to Nancy and Walter Herkey, Elizabeth was raised in Carpentersville, Illinois, before later making her home in Belvidere. On her 20th birthday, November 15, 1980, she married the love of her life, Miguel Lopez, with whom she shared a beautiful life and built a devoted family.

Elizabeth was a woman of deep faith and boundless warmth. She found great peace in prayer and great joy in her crochet work and sewing. She also loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking for family and friends, and enjoyed watching cooking shows that inspired her. Elizabeth was a devoted fan of America's Got Talent and The Voice, rarely missing an episode. Known for her outgoing and friendly nature, Elizabeth truly never met a stranger and could strike up a heartfelt conversation with anyone she crossed paths with. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcomed, valued, and loved, often turning strangers into lifelong friends and treating them like family.

Above all, her family was her world. Her seven grandchildren were her absolute favorite people, and she took immense pride in being a second mom and grandmother to her many beloved nieces and nephews. Her love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those around her will be treasured and remembered always.

She is survived by her loving husband, Miguel Lopez; her children, Kevin, Chris, Michelle, and Bobby (Nikita); and her seven treasured grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Donna and Sharon; her brother, Chuck (Yvonne) Herkey; her sister-in-law, Randi Herkey, beloved wife of the late Keith Herkey; her mother-in-law, Margarita Lopez; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Salvador (Carolina) Lopez, Roberto Lopez, and Guadalupe Galvan, beloved wife of the late Julio Galvan; and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nancy and Walter Herkey; her brothers, Kevin and Keith Herkey; her sister, Vikki Shelabarger; her father-in-law, Roberto Lopez; and her brother-in-law, Julio Galvan.

A visitation and celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held on Friday, October 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, 218 W. Hurlbut Avenue, Belvidere, Illinois.
