Obituary

Eleanor Hazel Warren Witt, passed away on February 27, 2005 at Golden Years of Walworth, Wisconsin.She was born August 7, 1909, the daughter of Alvin and Anna Martha Davis Warren of Victor Township, DeKalb County, Illinois. She graduated from Somonauk Community high School as Valedictorian of the class of 1927. She attended Northwestern University where she was a member of Beta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi and then the University of Illinois graduating in 1931 with majors in History, Latin English and minor in Greek. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After college she taught English, History and Latin for 9 years at Somonauk Community High School. She later was a substitute teacher for Belvidere High School.On June 23, 1941 she married Dealas J. Witt. Her late husband was an agricultural teacher and counselor at Belvidere High School. He passed away on December 24, 1996. They had one daughter, Meryde Jane Witt Hetzler.As a young girl, Eleanor played the piano at the Suydam United Methodist Church. She and her younger sister Charlotte played duets at piano recitals, and later in life she and her sister both had white cats that were sisters.She was a past member of the Belvidere Woman's Club, St. Joseph Hospital Pink Lady Auxiliary serving in the baby photo department and was past president of the Belvidere Panhellenic Society.She is a charter member of the Guilford Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, member of Robert Hempstead Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists, Rockford Colony National Society New England Women, Asa Cottrell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and First United Methodist Church of Belvidere where she had been a circle chairwomen and a member of Weseyann Circle.Because of her interest in history, genealogy and education, she loved telling her family members of the "olden days". Her great-grandfather walked five miles each morning and night to school to get an education. Her great-grandmother rode the stagecoach to Illinois and taught school for $6.00 a month. Her father, a teacher and a farmer, was a member of the Illinois Assembly and was one of the organizers of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, the first Farm Bureau in Illinois.She enjoyed knitting and needle pointing and made several needlepoint rugs. She also was an avid book reader, enjoyed playing bridge and traveling.In 1939 she and her good friend Frances Jones sailed to Europe on the French liner, the Normandie which had art work and furniture compared with those of the Palace of Versailles. They toured Europe by themselves visiting Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany and France. Right before their return home, a priest told them the news of war. They sailed home from Europe with the portholes covered and lights off on the ship because of submarines. The ship stopped in Halifax, Nova Scotia where a Canadian battleship escorted them to New York City on September 2, 1939.She is survived by a daughter, Meryde J. Hetzler (Stan) of Belvidere, two grandsons, Mark Hetzler of Chicago and Scott Hetzler of Northbrook, one great grandson, Nathan Hetzler, two nieces and three nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Dealas J. Witt, parents, sister, Charlotte Janssen, and brothers Rollin Warren and Davis Warren.
