Dorothy Mary (Marshallsay) Salley, born December 15, 1919, passed away at her home in Belvidere, Illinois on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the age of 96 years.  She was the daughter of Walter Robert Marshallsay of Corfe Castle, Dorset, England and Verna Violet (Peacock) Marshallsay of Rockford, Winnebago County. Dorothy was born in Rockford; into a Christian family with a faith ground in the Salvation Army.  Her father served as the Sunday School Superintendent at the Rockford Salvation Army Corps for 50 years and as Band Master of the Salvation Army Band.  Dorothy played trombone in the Salvation Army Band during her youthful years.  She was reared in Rockford and Caledonia and lived her entire life after marriage in the Belvidere area.  She was preceded in passing by her parents and three brothers, Donald, Leslie, and Roger Marshallsay, as well as her husband, Robert Gerald Salley (1920-2004).  She is survived by her three children, Brad (Judy) Salley (b 1946), Rowland (partner Leta Smith) Salley (b. 1949) and Rita (Robert Hurt) Salley (b.1949).

Dorothy married Robert Salley on September 20, 1941 in Rockford and quickly became a supportive war bride, traveling to boot camp at Camp Claiborne, LA with Robert who served in the US Army, 101st Airborne Division, participating in every European Campaign during WWII.  As everyone here at home, Dorothy observed much during the war including the sinking of Robert's ship, the USS Susan B. Anthony (AP 72), as it crossed the English Channel on D-Day, 1944.  After the war Dorothy and Robert settled in their Boone Street home in Belvidere where they remained their entire lives.  A loyal Army wife during and after WWII, Dorothy traveled with Robert many times, both in the USA and to Europe, as an active member of the 101st Airborne Division Association, and the USS Susan B. Anthony Reunion Group all the days of her life.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother, finding time to volunteer as a Pink Lady, with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and as a Belvidere High School Band Parent.  She served with the Belvidere Business Professional Women's Club and sang with the Presbyterian Church Choir for many years.  She loved to golf and play bridge.  In her school years Dorothy continued to play trombone, played basketball and softball and she was always, perhaps, the Number One Chicago Cubs Fan of all time.  In 1975 Dorothy traveled to Jamaica in the Caribbean on a trip awarded from her success at selling greeting cards for the Henri Fayette, Inc. Card Company.  She worked in local real estate and managed the administrative affairs for Mr. Salley's construction firm, the Salley Building Company, Inc.   Above all Dorothy loved being a homemaker for her family and devoted her later years to her two grandchildren, Robert (Amber) Salley and Rhonda (Cory) Osterberg and her six great grandchildren Ryan, Brandon and Lindsay Osterberg, Emma and Ian Salley and Brittany Hurt.

Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma to her family; Aunt Dot to her nieces and nephew and Dorothy to her friends, she was a kind and easy-going good sport in all she did.  She was able to share many great memories with her family in the days before she left us and she will be remembered with love by all who knew her.

The family wishes to thank Rosemarie Tieman, along with other wonderful caregivers, who gave so much to Mother.  Now, may she rest in Peace.
