Doris Marriett Hawes died at Willamette View Health Center in Portland, Oregon on May 15, 2007 at the age of 95. Doris Marriett was born at home near Poplar Grove, Illinois on Christmas Day in 1911. She married Arthur Hawes in June 1935.Doris attended Cornell College and Northwestern University, graduating with a degree in music education. She was a life-long educator and began her career at the one-room Bethel School in Poplar Grove prior to her marriage. Later she taught in the Manchester and Loves Park school districts in Illinois. After moving to Portland in 1984, she volunteered with RSVP and tutored in the North Clackamas and Jennings Lodge School Districts.Doris was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of United Methodist Church in Poplar Grove where she was a church organist, choir member and sang many solos and duets with her husband. In Portland, she joined the Moreland Presbyterian Church, where she was also active in the church choir, and traveled extensively while her health permitted.Doris was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Birdena Marriett, her husband Arthur Hawes, her brother Frank Marriett and her sister Marian Howland. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Gordon and Diana Hawes of Longwood, Florida, a daughter Donna Nedelisky of Portland, Oregon, four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Willamette View Foundation in Portland, Oregon or Poplar Grove United Methodist Church in care of the family.
