IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Ray
Hawkins
November 9, 1947 – April 16, 2025
Donald "Duck" Ray Hawkins, 77, of Belvidere, IL, went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2025. He was born on November 9, 1947, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Theresa (Victorian) and Jessie Hawkins.
Duck was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose presence brought laughter and joy wherever he went. His greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. He celebrated all of their accomplishments and was immensely proud of the people they had become.
Known for his incredible cooking, his world-famous gumbo was a beloved family favorite. He had a passion for finding the best ingredients, often making rounds to various grocery stores around Rockford. Duck also enjoyed testing his luck with scratch-offs and slot machines and could often be found watching sports, documentaries, or war stories.
Duck retired from Chrysler after 31 years of dedicated service. He had a strong work ethic and a commitment to provide for his family.
Duck proudly served in the United States Army, a Vietnam War veteran from 1967 to 1969. He earned numerous medals and honors, including the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Though he was humble about his service, he carried that pride quietly. When thanked for his service while wearing his Vietnam veteran cap he appreciated every kind word from those who recognized it.
Though we will miss him dearly, we find comfort in the laughter he shared, the meals he made, the wisdom he passed on, and the love that still surrounds us because of him. Duck's legacy is one of strength, kindness, and deep, soulful joy.
He leaves behind a family and community forever changed by his presence—and forever grateful for the gift of his life. His memory will be cherished by countless family members and dear friends.
He is survived by his wife, Joni Hawkins; daughter, Cori (Jacy) Nilsen; sons, Travis (Krystal) Hawkins, Ryan Hawkins, Terrence Hawkins, and Jesse Woodard; grandchildren, Ethan, Jaylin, Caleb, Kiera, Alyssa, Mia, Ariana, Makenna, and Travis Jr.; brothers, Jesse (Claudia) Hawkins and Charles (Robin) Hawkins; bonus family members, Carol and Dave Stumpf, Sarah Hermann, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who love him dearly.
He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, Theresa and Jessie Hawkins; sister Matilda; and brothers, Carl and Wilford.
Duck's visitation will be Tuesday, April 29th between the hours of 11-1pm at Anderson Funeral Home. Located at 218 W. Hurlbut Ave. Belvidere, IL 61008. Celebration of life funeral service to follow at 1pm.
