Don Buck of Belvidere passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 26, 2021 in Anam Care, Rockford, IL. Don was born September 19, 1928, in his parents' home in Cherry Valley, IL, son of Delbert and Mamie Buck. Don was a 1946 graduate of Rockford East High School. Don met the love of his life, Gloria Swail dancing to her band and celebrated 66 years of marriage until her passing in 2015. After they married, Don and Gloria formed a dance band, The Stardusters, performing for years in the Belvidere – Rockford area. He loved music and dancing.
Don was an athlete, who excelled in baseball. He signed with the Cleveland Indians in February 1947, playing on their Blue Jays minor league team.Don also excelled in water skiing.Don traveled the mid-west competing in many tournaments winning both Illinois and Wisconsin State Championships for 10 years running. Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed going bowling.
Don began his working career being hired by the National Sewing Machine Co. to both work in their payroll department as well as playing 2nd base on the factory league leading baseball team. He left the National Sewing Machine Co. to work at The Beloit Corporation where he had a 40-year career in data processing, running one of the first IBM mainframe computers.
Don was an active member in the Kish A Wauk Boat & Ski Club, The Star Zenith Boat Club, The Moose Club and Keen Age Center.
Pre-deceased by his parents, wife, Gloria, his brother, David Arthur. Survived by his twin sons, David (Minda) Buck, Toronto, Dana (Kathy) Buck, Rockford, special nephew Brad (Kathie) Palmer, Loves Park, brother Harry, grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Don truly loved life and he lived it to the fullest, always with a smile.
The family would like to thank Anam Care for the kind, loving care they gave him.
The funeral service will be Friday, July 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., at Anderson Funeral & Cremation Services, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, IL with Pastor Jim Bell officiating. The visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, Belvidere, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Boone County Museum of History.
