John Donald "Don" Olson, 87, of Poplar Grove, formerly of Glenview, Illinois, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, February 11, 2017 at Maple Crest Care Center. He was born April 14, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, son of John Einar and Anita Frideborg (Johnson) Olson. Don married the love of his life, Margaret "Marge" Dietrich on November 21, 1953 in Wilmette, Illinois, recently celebrating 63 years together. He was an accomplished carpenter, tradesman and engineer. Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Belvidere, and formerly of Holy Trinity Church in Glenview. He was a member of the Chicago (Swedish) Svithiod Club, and was the president of the Glenview Lions Club in 1961. Don served as a reservist for the Wilmette Police Department, and was the Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Glenview. Don took pride in his membership in the Candlewick Lake Community. He had a passion for sailing, gardening, bird watching, woodworking, and the Chicago Cubs.
Don is loved and missed by his loving wife, Marge of Poplar Grove; children, Susan O. (Gregory) Faust of La Grange Park, John D. (Susan) Olson, Jr., of Galesburg, Ina L. (Jeffrey) Gerald of Naperville, and Christine L. Depenbrok of Des Plaines; grandchildren, Andrew (Jessica) Faust, Matthew Faust, Dominic Faust, Benjamin Olson, Madeline Gerald, Jacob Gerald, and John Depenbrok; and loving uncle to Charles (deceased), Scott, Bill and Marci. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ina Howes, and niece, Marilyn Christoph.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1300 Pearl Street, Belvidere, Illinois 61008 with Rev. Scott Stolberg officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m, until the time of service. Cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
