Obituary

David W. Schmidt, 92, lifetime resident of Belvidere, passed away Monday, September 8, 2014 in his daughter's home. He was born March 4, 1922 in Rockford, IL; the son of Herman and Louise Schmidt. David was a veteran of WWII serving as a marine. He received his GED after returning home from service in the Pacific Theatre. David married Audrey Chamberlain in Belvidere, IL on May 3, 1947. He and his family were lifetime active members of Immanuel Lutheran Church and he was an elder in the church for many years. He was a self-taught precision tool and die maker. He retired from Barber Coleman Co. after 30 years. Retirement didn't last long, he continued to work part time for Bob's Hardware in plumbing and electrical. During his life, he worked part time for Art Hyland as a carpenter, and Chaw Lambert in the Hub Cigar Store. David loved to travel and along with his family vacationed every year going to all but two states in this great nation, Mexico, Canada, Finland and Norway. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With his great-grandchildren, David taught 2 of them to walk using his walker.
David is survived by his daughter, Nancy Schmidt; son, David (Kris) Schmidt; 3 grandchildren, Derek (Jamie) Holtz, Terra (Troi) Knott, and Nathan Schmidt; 4 great-grandchildren, Jillian Taylor, Aaron Taylor, Keeghan Holtz, Bethany Dobbratz; sister, Gloria (Ernie) Mowers; brother, Ron (Bernie) Schmidt; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Audrey, granddaughter, Jonette Taylor; brother, Maynard Schmidt.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Thursday, September 11, 2014 in Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Chapel, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave, Belvidere, IL 61008. A second visitation will be held from 8:30-9:30 A.M., Friday, September 12, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 A.M., Friday, September 12, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Allan Buss officiating. Burial in Highland Garden of Memories.
