Charles Cunningham, 90, of Belvidere, IL, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at Swedish American Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 16, 1934, in Belvidere, IL, Charles was the son of Lester Cunningham and Hazel (Smith) Cunningham. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Charles led a life rich in service, community involvement, and unwavering love for his family.

Charles graduated from Belvidere High School, where he was proudly elected as the 1951 Homecoming King. He continued his education at Illinois State University before marrying the love of his life, Romelle (Miller), on August 25, 1957. Together, they shared 67 years of marriage and raised three children, a testament to their strong bond and deep commitment to one another.

Charles served his country with honor in the United States Army, fulfilling his duty with pride and dedication. After his service, he spent 26 years working for Belvidere Chrysler, from 1965 until his retirement in 1991.

A true pillar of his community, Charles actively engaged in several organizations, including the Lions Club, VFW, Ida Library Board, and the Girl Scouts Board of Directors. He proudly served three terms as an Alderman for the City of Belvidere.

In addition to his work, Charles was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. He and Romelle cherished their trips to Arizona to attend Cubs spring training, where they shared their love for the game. He was also an avid cook who took great pleasure in preparing home-cooked meals for his family, especially his cherished Thanksgiving dinners, complete with plenty of leftovers to share.

Charles will be remembered for his dry humor, work ethic, and steady support for his family and community.

He is survived by his wife, Romelle Cunningham; their children, Kathy Cunningham, Robert Charles Cunningham, James "Jim" (Sarah) Cunningham; grandchildren, Emma and Grace Cunningham, one great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cunningham, niece Annette Cunningham, as well as numerous cousins and extended family.

He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, Hazel and Lester Cunningham and brother, Jarrett "Jerry" Cunningham.

Charles' visitation will be Sunday, March 9th between 5-7pm at Anderson Funeral Home. Located at 218 W. Hurlbut Ave. Belvidere. A second visitation will be Monday, March 10th at 10am until time of service. Funeral to follow at 11am. Burial at Belvidere Cemetery.
