Obituary

Belvidere, IllinoisCarl Walter Hallen, 96, of Belvidere died peacefully, Tuesday afternoon, February 12, 2013 in Northwoods Care Center following a short illness. Walter was born November 30, 1916 in Caledonia, IL the son of Ture and Elizabeth (Breng) Hallen. He married Karin Persson in Belvidere on August 10, 1945. Walter owned Hallen Construction and Hallen Burial Vaults for many years. He was also the Boone County Zoning Officer for ten years. Walter was a lifetime member of the American Legion Boone Post 77 and the John Hugo Kaiser Post 1461. He was a two term board member of the Belvidere Y.M.C.A. and was formerly active with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and his trip to Sweden with Karin and Janet to visit relatives. He was an expert craftsmen and enjoyed wood working in his retirement. Walter was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was the chairman of the building committee. He loved his family deeply. Walter served our country during WWII in the European Theater with the U.S. Army 8th Division Signal Corp.Walter is loved and will be missed by his wife Karin of Belvidere; daughter Janet (Michael) Truitt of Roscoe; brother Elmer Donald (Sue) Hallen of Durham, N.C.; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Vince) Zalapi and Daniel (Lydia) Truitt; step great-grandchildren Nora Truitt, Braden, Blake and Benjamin Zalapi godchild Margaret Olson Buss; nieces, nephews cousins and cousins in Sweden. Walter is predeceased by his parents, brothers Herbert in infancy and Robert; sisters in- law Marjorie and Marilyn Hallen; as well as his stepmother Effie Hallen.Walter's family would like to acknowledge the loving compassionate care of Dr. Malaker, OSF St. Anthony Medical Center staff on 1 south and 4 west; the staff of Maple Crest Care Center and the staff of Northwoods Care Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in care of Zion Lutheran Church in Walter's memory.
