Obituary

Bruce Paul Jones, 82, of Poplar Grove, IL, went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2024. He was born on March 7, 1942, in Newark, New Jersey. Bruce was deeply committed to his family, his country, and serving the Lord. On December 26, 1970, he married the love of his life, Gwen (Newhouse), and they shared 53 years together.

He graduated from high school in 1960 in New Jersey. Bruce was an avid soccer fan, player, and coached the sport for many years.  He attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL for 2 years following his military discharge.

Bruce was a shining example of integrity and service. Between 1961 and 1966 he served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft crash rescue crew member, stationed in Thailand and Greenland as well as other TDY locations. He was trained in crash site fire protection as well.

After proudly serving in the Air Force, he continued his commitment to public safety as an Illinois State Trooper, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and the community alike.

His unwavering dedication to his duty was matched only by his compassion for those he served. Bruce spent the last 7 years with the state police on the Academy staff, teaching students as well as other police officers in the D.A.R.E. Program.  He ultimately retired after serving 20 years as a part-time courthouse security officer with the Winnebago County Sherriff's Department.

As a devout Christian, Bruce lived his faith through action, participating actively in his church community. His commitment to helping others reflected his belief in service and compassion. He was a long time member of Capron Lutheran Church, served as a Liturgist, and sang in the choir. Bruce was also involved in the Stephen Ministry program, providing spiritual counsel to those who were deeply affected by trauma, illness.
Rest in peace Bruce.
