Bernard P. Schmalen, 86, of Belvidere IL, passed away Sunday, January 22,2017 with his loving family at his side. Bernard was born December 4, 1930 in Charles City, IA, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Nellis) Schmalen. He married Maxine Della Ries on May 22, 1951 in Charles City, Iowa. Bernie drove a gas truck for R.J. Daniels Fuel and Tire for over 25 years. Bernie was a member of the VFW and a past member of the Eagles Club. He adored spending time with his family; and hunting and fishing when he could. Bernie loved cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Green Bay Packers.

Bernard is loved and will be missed by his children, Joseph (Debra) Schmalen, Gail (Kurt) Bryan, Daniel (Karen) Schmalen, Teresa (John) Stumpf, Catherine (Jimmy) Grimes; grandchildren, Aimee (Nathan) Hansen, Ryan (Susan) Schmalen, Brent (Breanna) Bryan, Brandon Bryan, Brittney Peters, Jordan and Jacey Schmalen, Brianna Grimes, Shianna (Brandon) Keegan, Coty Stumpf, Jen (Leon) Parker and Andy (Sarah) Vineyard; and 6 Great-Grandchildren.

Bernard is predeceased by his wife, Maxine, parents and grandson Nicholas Peters, brother, Tony Schmalen; and sisters, Kay Hartogh and Teresa Dobbs.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Anderson Funeral and Cremation Services, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave, Belvidere, IL 61008 with Patrick Anderson, Celebrant officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2017 at the funeral home.
