Alvin Ernest Bredthauer was born July 5, 1915 in Scotia, Nebraska to Herman D. and Anna Marie (Klein) Bredthauer and entered into rest at his home in Belvidere on Friday, June 4, 2010. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Belvidere, Illinois on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M. and ending at time of services. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1045 Belvidere Rd. Belvidere, IL 61008 or Zion Lutheran Church 201 Scotia Avenue, Scotia NE 68875. You may leave a message of comfort or light a candle at www.buckwheelerhyland.comHe was a graduate of Scotia (Nebraska) High School in 1932. On July 12, 1936 he was united in marriage at Arcadia, Nebraska to Arlene Fern Eyerly. She preceded him in death on October 20, 2009. A Memorial Service for Alvin and Arlene will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Scotia, Nebraska on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., followed by inurnment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. July 12th would have been their 74th Anniversary. Alvin was employed by the Loup Valley Co-operative Oil Company and farmed the home place of his parents northeast of Scotia until 1957 when he moved with his family to Algonquin, Illinois where he operated the farm owned by Dr. James B. Eyerly. Alvin and Arlene retired from farming into the town of Algonquin and then in 1999 to Belvidere, Illinois.Survivors of the immediate family include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Phyllis (the late Dr. Thomas) Harwood, Sandra (Bruce) Gielow and Betty (Craig) Panepucci, all of Elgin, Illinois; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" (Joyce) Bredthauer, of Murray, Kentucky and James Alvin (Pera) Bredthauer, of Belvidere, Illinois; five grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Bredthauer (Michael Vanhook), of Calera, Alabama, Rebecca Gielow, of Rockford, Illinois, Erin Panepucci, of Elgin, Illinois, Michael Bredthauer, of Carmel, Indiana, and Daniel Bredthauer, of Elgin, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Richards of Elgin, Illinois and Kenneth Bredthauer, of Carmel, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bogaard of Sun City Center, Florida, a cousin, Phillip Seefus, of Nebraska as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Alvin was preceded in death by four brothers, Elmer, Herman H., Wilmer and Clarence Bredthauer; five sisters, Sophie Fuss, Lillian Williams, Dorothy Meyer, Ruth and Lula Kirby; his step-mother, Gertrude; a step-brother, Henry Leindecker, a step-sister, Mollie Long and his son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Harwood in 2008.Alvin was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and most recently of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere, Illinois.As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball with the town team in Scotia, Nebraska serving as manager for several years. Towns with teams in the Sherman-Howard League included Scotia, Wolbach, Dannebrog, Ashton, Greeley, Palmer and Farwell, Nebraska. After moving to Illinois in 1957, he played several years for the Algonquin team. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed playing cards and being with his family, neighbors and friends.
