IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allan Charles
Gottinger
April 26, 1945 – July 6, 2025
Allan Charles Gottinger passed away on July 6th, 2025, at UW Health Swedish American Hospital due to complications from leukemia and a broken heart. Born in Milwaukee, WI, on April 26, 1945, to Aloys and Dorothy (Timper) Gottinger, Allan spent most of his childhood in West Allis and some time in Minneapolis. It was during a family vacation in the Wisconsin North Woods in 1961 that he met his future wife, Penny Gierke, who was vacationing with her family from Chicago. Their high school romance blossomed over a long distance and culminated in their marriage in September 1968.
After graduating from South Division High School in Milwaukee, Allan served in the US Army Tactical Data Unit in Germany from 1965 to 1967. A year later, he married his high school sweetheart, Penny. Following a few years in Carpentersville, they moved to McHenry, where they stayed until their daughters finished school. During that time, Allan worked as a plant manager and often took on the role of handyman and innovator, constantly fixing or improving things at work and home. He skillfully addressed Penny's needs after her MS diagnosis, making life easier around the house. After a brief stay in Florida, Allan and Penny moved back to Illinois to be closer to their granddaughters. Allan retired after 10 years of working at the Chrysler plant in Belvidere, spending his retirement "putzing" in the garage and reading.
Allan is survived by his daughters, Kari Gottinger and Jennifer (Paul) Dettman; granddaughters Kaitlin Box (Cole) and Madalyn (Derek) Drays; great-grandson Jaxon; bonus grandchildren Kayla, David, Nicole, and Bradly Dettman; sister-in-law Linda (Dennis) Gerstung; nephew Cory (Katie) Gerstung; and great nieces and nephews Devin, Adriana, Kenadee, and Jameson. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Penny, his parents, mother and father-in-law Harold and Alta Gierke, and nephews Dennis and Jason Gerstung.
A celebration of life for both Allan and Penny will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MS Society.
